This time last season, Aberavon were currently struggling to salvage their first win of the season sitting miserably at the bottom of the league. The Ospreys on the other hand were on a roll, losing only two of their opening encounters topping the table.
This season reads a whole new story. Ospreys although missing their international names due to the World Cup have only managed to win two games, one of which was packed with their international cavalry! A bonus point win over Italian side Zebre on the weekend snuck Ospreys up to 8th in the league after weeks of hanging around the bottom two with their fellow welsh regions unfamiliarly beating them in the table!
Aberavon on the other hand were on an unbeaten streak this season! Superb wins over Bedwas, Newport, Cardiff only to come to an abrupt hault over Pontypridd at Sardis Road. A tough outfit to beat away the Wizards maintained their composure and went on to beat Llandovery and Llanelli in the following weeks. Sitting second from the top seems such a contrast to last season it begs the question….
Aberavon what are you doing? Ospreys, what have you done?
Aberavon being the feeder club to the Ospreys in hindsight should be producing the future talent to wear the Ospreys jersey, but the relationship between the club and the region never seem in sync. Grass root rugby seems to be slipping further and further away from the big stage.
